Abstract
⺠A legislative mandate supported the use of science in MPA planning in California. ⺠A clearly defined role for scientists can promote the use of science in MPA planning. ⺠Simple, credible, scientific design guidelines informed MPA planning in California. ⺠Transparency and participation are essential for use of best available science.
