Abstract
•Water quenching has more influence on granite rocks with larger grain size.•Slowly-cooled rock specimens have longer stable crack propagation regions than rapidly-cooled rocks.•Rapid cooling influences the stress threshold of medium-grained granite.•Either grain size or porosity can individually affect the stress at which new cracks are initiated at different cooling stages.
