•An MS method for analyzing evolution mechanism of rockburst in tunnel is proposed.•Strain burst and strain–structure slip rockburst has different evolution mechanism.•Stiff structures can affect fracturing type ratios during rockburst evolution.•The first occurrence of ‘big’ event relies on the type of rockburst.
