Abstract
•A case study of a Canadian underground mine is examined in a FLAC3D numerical model.•The pre-mining stress field is generated using traditional and alternative methods.•Results within the rockmass are compared in terms of generated stress values.•The alternative method that uses boundary tractions gives more realistic results.
