A new nail penetration test for estimation of rock strength

•A new and simple apparatus for the nail penetration test is introduced.•The apparatus manufactured during the current study for the nail penetration test has a good potential for standardization.•Using the new apparatus, several nail penetration tests were carried out on 10 types of rocks.•A strong correlation exists between the results of our nail penetration test and the unconfined compressive strength test.
