Abstract
► We review the biofuels policy of the European Union. ► We examine whether the EU could be regarded as a 'normative power'. ► EU policy is viewed through the prism of the four dimensions of sustainability. ► EU policy is largely unsustainable socially, environmentally, temporally and economically. ► Normative intentions present, but economic competitiveness more central.
