Abstract
Due to depletion of fossil fuels, concerns about energy security and global warming make renewable energy resources more attractive. In this regard, using biodiesel seems to be a possible feasible source of energy for transportation. To decrease dependency on fossil fuels, it is imperative to replace diesel by biodiesel completely in order to mitigate the negative effects of diesel by using mixed feedstock without modifying the engine hardware. This review presents a comprehensive indication of the performance and emission characteristics using mixed feedstock i.e. biodiesel-alcohol and biodiesel-biodiesel blends. Most of the researchers had suggested that optimum blends from their respective studies that have capability to completely eliminates diesel from compression ignition (CI) engines. The biodiesel-alcohol blends eliminate the problem of using higher percentage of biodiesel blends in unmodified CI engines. Most of the researchers has reported that the temperature of exhaust gas (EGT) and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) increases while tailstock emissions reduces with the use of mixed feedstock. The comprehensive review concluded that mixed feedstock have potential to completely eliminate diesel from CI engines.
