Abstract
► We have observed and modelled the ionospheric response to the eclipse of 1 August 2008. ► This eclipse occurred at high-latitude, which leads to specific features. ► The large magnetic dip angles favour downward ion diffusion due to plasma cooling. ► The totality affects open field lines that undergo escape of H+. ► The effects of both the eclipse and cusp precipitation are observed.
