Abstract
Neutron and X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements have been used to investigate the magneto-structural phase transitions in 20% Cu substituted multiferroic CoCr2O4 spinel. The Jahn-Teller active Cu2+ ion in the tetrahedral A-site of the spinel configuration induces the Jahn-Teller distortion slightly above the Néel temperature. In this compound, we observe a Jahn-Teller distortion of the crystal structure at 90 K. It was further observed that the high temperature cubic (Fd3‾m) structure coexists with the low temperature orthorhombic (Fddd) structure till the lowest temperature of measurement.
