Abstract
Neutron and X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements have been used to investigate the magneto-structural phase transitions in 20% Cu substituted multiferroic CoCr2O4 spinel. The Jahn-Teller active Cu2+ ion in the tetrahedral A-site of the spinel configuration induces the Jahn-Teller distortion slightly above the Néel temperature. In this compound, we observe a Jahn-Teller distortion of the crystal structure at 90â¯K. It was further observed that the high temperature cubic (Fd3â¾m) structure coexists with the low temperature orthorhombic (Fddd) structure till the lowest temperature of measurement.
