Abstract
This review investigates the advantages and disadvantages of gaseous radiation detectors when compared with solid-state detectors, for use in radiation imaging, which are caused by the differing properties of gases and solids. Imaging applications for which micro-pattern gas detectors (MPGDs) are superior, include neutron imaging, high-linear-energy-transfer (LET) radiation imaging, and low-energy-depositing radiation imaging. This paper is focused on these applications where MPGDs, in particular, the glass gas electron multiplier (G-GEM), are superior, and their development is described and relevant experimental results are discussed.
