Abstract
The effect of mesoporous silica MCM-41 and SBA-15 as a synergistic agent on the flame retardancy of intumescent flame retardant polypropylene composites (PP-IFR) were studied, and the IFR system mainly consisted of the ammonium polyphosphate (APP) as an acid source and blowing agent, pentaerythriol (PER) as a carbonization agent. The mesoporous MCM-41 and SBA-15 were incorporated into flame retardant formulation at four different concentrations (1, 3, 5, 8 wt.%) to investigate the synergism between the flame retardant materials. A synergistic effect in flame retardancy was best when a suitable amount of SBA-15 was used in combination with APP and PER.
