Abstract
The paper addresses one of the key problems in structural health monitoring – how to separate defects accumulated in structural members from those in joints. It is suggested to use an additional set of measurements – electrical conductivity – to distinguish between two types of defects. The theory is illustrated by a clear simple one-dimensional example of longitudinal vibrations of a slender bar.
