Abstract

The momentum and thermal boundary layers developing along a steadily moving plane surface in a quiescent ambient is considered. A generalized similarity transformation is introduced to enable the analysis of the influence of temperature-dependent fluid properties. The case with only variable viscosity is recovered as a special case for which a Blasius-type transformation applies. Earlier studies of this particular problem are revisited with the view to point out some crucial misconceptions. New numerical results for water at atmospheric pressure are provided.
