Abstract

•Duplex composite coatings were in-situ synthesized successfully by laser cladding.•The addition of Si caused the coarsening of the Cup and the Fep.•The addition of Si induced the formation of nanosized intermetallic compound Fe3Si.•The addition of Si also led to an increase in microhardness and wear resistance of the coating.

Duplex composite coatings composed of a Cu-rich particles (Cup)-reinforced Fe-rich layer and Fe-rich particles (Fep)-reinforced Cu-rich layer were synthesized in-situ by laser cladding. The addition of Si caused the coarsening of the Cup and the Fep, enhanced the area percentage of the Fe-rich layer in the total coating, and induced in-situ formation of the intermetallic compound Fe3Si. As a result, the microhardness of the Fe-rich and Cu-rich layers in the Cu61.1Fe32.9Si6 coating was much higher than that of the Fe-rich and Cu-rich layers in the Cu65Fe35 coating. The wear resistance of the Cu61.1Fe32.9Si6 duplex composite coating was also better than that of the Cu65Fe35 duplex composite coating.
