For the open-loop recycling to apply refrigerator plastics from post-consumer waste polypropylene, it needs to specify the characteristics of recycled polypropylene (RPP). Thermal, spectroscopic, morphological and chromatographic analyzes are performed in comparison with the impact-enhanced polypropylene copolymer (Impact-PP). The performance evaluation of RPP by the various mechanical and physical testing methods is compared with Impact-PP used in refrigerator plastics. Quality assessment shows that RPP by open-loop recycling (OL-RPP) is the balanced plastic with strong and tough properties similar to Impact-PP and OL-RPP is applicable to refrigerator plastics with a good impact property at low temperature. While closed-loop recycling is limited in volume, open-loop recycling from post-consumer waste polypropylene is expandable the quantity used of RPP.
► Open-loop recycling from post-consumer waste polypropylene is investigated. ► Recycled polypropylene by open-loop recycling (OL-RPP) is the mechanical blend with PP/EPR. ► Characteristics and performance evaluation show that OL-RPP is applicable to refrigerator plastics.
