Abstract

Fugitive emissions from leaking valves, pumps and flanges contribute to over a million metric tones per year. Elimination or reduction of fugitive emissions could save industry many millions of dollars and prolong scarce resources. Sealing system is the major contributing factor will be through the lowering of fugitive emissions. This article looks at effects of properties of sealing elements on fugitive emissions. In this study, commercial sealing materials and new developed materials were tested according to international sealing standards. The results were discussed between types of materials. It is revealed that density of sealing materials is decreased and sealing performance is improved by the development in material technologies. After careful selection appropriate for the specific application, correct installation, and operation according to the performance envelope, regular inspection and maintenance must be considered for low or zero emission requirements.
