Abstract

In this study, performance testing of the designed and constructed two-dimensional strain gage type drilling dynamometer has been carried out with the help of a model to derive an empirical equation for drill thrust and torque. Design formulas and constructive properties of the dynamometer were not considered in this article, but parameters computed for construction of it have been presented in the tables to show what kind of dynamometer has been used in the tests. Using the constructed dynamometer, several drilling tests were performed. Using test results from the force measurements of drilling operations, two empirical equations for drill torque and thrust were derived, respectively. Then cutting forces calculated using these empirical equations for drill torque and thrust have been compared to the results of previous authors by plotting graphs to show whether there is a good matching between them. In derivation of empirical equations, the appreciation of the data collected by constructed dynamometer from drill cutting operations was made by means of a model derived by dimensional analysis. Thus, assurance of criteria used in designing of the dynamometer and usage reliability of the dynamometer in drilling and allied processes to derive an expression for cutting forces or to measure cutting forces directly for conventional or newly developed materials have been approved.
