Abstract

Fly ash from coal causes erosive wear in equipments in thermoelectric power plants. This paper investigates thermal sprayed coatings produced by the high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) to improve the material performance under such condition. Three different HVOF sprayed coatings (WC–12Co, Cr3C2–NiCr and WC–CrC–Ni) were tested under high temperature (∼310 °C) erosion by means of an apparatus that simulated real conditions. Fly ash was employed as erosive material. The results showed that under these tests conditions the WC–12Co coating worn about 18 times less than bare SAE 1020 steel.
