Abstract

Benzophenone derivatives are promising material for various optical applications. In the present work, bulk crystals of a novel benzophenone derivative, 2-chloro 5-nitro benzophenone (2C5NBP) were grown by solution growth. The growth process was discussed based on solute-solvent interaction in two different growth media. The crystal structure of the material was analysed by single crystal X-ray diffraction method and found that the material belongs to triclinic crystal structure with the space group of P1. Moreover, the functional groups of the 2C5NBP were identified by FTIR analysis. The material melts at the temperature of 90.3 °C and it has wide gap between melting and vapourization process. Moreover, the hardness of the material is comparable with other benzophenone derivatives. The optical absorption studies show that the material has wide transparence window in the visible region and thus it can be useful for optical filters.
