Abstract

Sm3+ doped CaBi2B2O7 orange-red emitting phosphor has been synthesized by solid-state reaction method. The photoluminescence properties of CaBi2B2O7:Sm3+ phosphor have been investigated. CaBi2B2O7:Sm3+ phosphor can be effectively excited by 404 nm near-ultraviolet (NUV) light and features orange-red emission centered at 560, 605 and 649 nm corresponding to the 4G5/2 → 6HJ (J = 5/2, 7/2, 9/2) transitions of Sm3+ ions, respectively. The optimum concentration of Sm3+ ions in CaBi2B2O7 is found to be 5.0 mol% and the corresponding concentration quenching mechanism quenching is ascribed to be electric dipole–dipole interaction according to Dexter’s theory. Moreover, the chromaticity coordinate of CaBi2B2O7:Sm3+ phosphor is calculated to be (0.530, 0.469) All results suggest that CaBi2B2O7:Sm3+ phosphor is a kind of potential orange-red emitting phosphor.
