Abstract
Inflammation is the process by which the body responds to injury. C-reactive protein (CRP) is one of the acute phase proteins that increase during systemic inflammation. It represents thus a marker of first choice of an inflammatory phenomenon. CRP assay is however also carried out in another field. Laboratory evidence and findings from clinical studies showed that inflammation plays a part in atherosclerosis'etiology (arterial sclerosis characterized by the accumulation of amorphous lipids in the internal tunic of the vessel). Thus CRP represents, even at lower rates than in acute inflammation, a marker of the cardiovascular risk; indeed an individual with high basal CRP has an increased cardiovascular risk. A high sensitivity assay for CRP test (hs-CRP) is thus needed.
