Abstract
Louis Pasteur's vaccine against rabies was introduced in France during 1885. A year later it became available within the United States. This article tells the story of the first use of the Pasteur vaccine in America and describes the early history of the vaccine's production and distribution across the country by Pasteur Institutes established for this purpose. of Pasteur's landmark studies on rabies are presented: research which pioneered the field of virology and the use of immunization to prevent infectious diseases.
