Abstract
⺠Development of Type 1 diabetes is governed by genetic and environmental factors. ⺠Type 1 diabetes incidence increasing faster than is accounted for by genetic change, highlighting environmental factors. ⺠Helminths co-evolved with the mammalian immune system and have developed potent immunomodulatory mechanisms. ⺠Exploiting helminth-derived molecules for the treatment of autoimmunity constitutes a promising therapeutic approach.
