Abstract
A simple method is proposed to generate high order optical ultra-wideband (UWB) signals. A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) filter is used as a frequency discriminator to convert phase modulation to intensity modulation when generating high order UWB signals. Simulation results show that the fractional bandwidths of the generated signals are over 50%, which are in accordance with the FCC definition of UWB signal. By adjusting the laser's center wavelength, we can increase the order of the generated UWB signal, and thus make the generated signal more consistent with the pulse selection criteria of UWB signal.
