Abstract
The rect function is expanded into a truncated Hermite–Gauss (H–G) series and its optimization is analyzed. As an application example, a propagation expression for a cosh-Gaussian (ChG) beam through a slit is derived and the results are compared with the direct numerical integration of the Fresnel diffraction integral and with the complex Gaussian function expansion.
