Abstract
The cranial base, particularly the synchondrosis/synostosis sphenooccipitalis or synchondrosis sphenobasilaris (SSB) plays an important role in the cranial approach of osteopathy and craniosacral therapy. This article examines the importance of the SSB by analyzing scientific studies. The attention is focused on the mobility of SSB in the context of its ossification, the possibility of verifying cranial palpation patterns by using imaging techniques, and the correlation of cranial palpation patterns with symptoms in neonates and adults. Based on the published studies, it is not possible to make any clear statements about the significance of the SSB for health and disease. Also, the literature on ossification of SSB is inadequate.
