Abstract
Osteoporosis and osteopenia affect millions of people in the United States. These conditions increase the risk of fractures and are financial burdens for patients, families, and society. To combat this, osteoporosis prevention measures should begin early and extend throughout life and should target modifiable risk factors, such as lifestyle behaviors. Goal-setting, a preventive strategy used in a variety of situations, increases patient involvement in care and improves health outcomes. This clinical study addresses application of goal-setting in osteoporosis prevention through further examination of the condition of osteoporosis, goal-setting theory, and goal-setting strategies for the nurse practitioner.
