Abstract
Most analyses of sandwich structures consider static loading or dynamic loading in which loads are applied slowly enough so that beam and plate theories are adequate in predicting the overall bending deformation. However, for impulsive loading generated by explosions or impacts, the early phase of the response is not captured by these structural theories as it involves wave propagation through the thickness. Significant damage can be introduced during this early phase.
