Abstract
Visual impairment in childhood may be related to abnormalities that affect any part of the eye and the brain. These deficiencies have often a genetic cause, allowing genetic counseling. But there can be of acquired origin (infectious, traumatic, tumoral) whose frequency must be limited by preventive measures. These visual impairments are likely to affect the psychomotor development of the child and his or her learning abilities. This repercussion is more important in case of polyhandicap, which can be observed in many etiologies of visual impairment. This emphasize the importance of screening for the situations that may lead to a visual deficit in order to ensure a treatment as early as possible and if necessary to set up an early management of this sensory deficit and/or to ensure the compensation.
