Abstract
Some ventilator settings such as the fraction of inspired oxygen, the inspiratory flow rate, the setting of an end-inspiratory plateau, the inspiratory-to-expiratory time ratio, and some settings that are more specific to an assisted ventilation support have been less investigated in the clinical setting than other settings such as tidal volume or positive end-expiratory pressure. However, these “hidden” settings may largely influence the efficacy of mechanical ventilation, the breathing and comfort of patients. It is therefore important to know how to address these settings in order to better adapt, whenever possible, the ventilator to the patient, and not the patient to the ventilator.
