Abstract
The aim of this short review is to summarise the last progress regarding the anaesthetic management of prematurely born infants who undergo minor superficial surgery, mainly inguinal hernia repair. The issues raised by the possible neurotoxicity of general anaesthetic agents but also the need to pay attention to minimise intraoperative changes in oxygenation, ventilation, blood pressure, blood glucose level and temperature are underlined, as well as the risk for early and late post-anaesthetic apnoea.
