Abstract
Due to the social role he plays, the individual serving as a nurse requires excellence as part of professionalism', regarding which, this article shows how to portray a positive image and identity of this discipline. Grounded theory methods were utilized based on student discourses on their own meaning and image of professionalism», how, where and why you need it, the traits which define it, and the skills required to develop it. Results allowed students to identify the attributes all nursing professionals should have, fundamentally, to show you are a «good person who cares». Emerging from this research is the thesis that professionalism is a personal process of continuous improvement in professional practices, which requires spaces and times, and demands efficient role models, in excellence and quality in teaching as well as in patient care and social contexts, in order to exist.
