Abstract
The technological development of racing sailboats leads to new traumas linked to the high speeds attained, today's comparable with those encountered in mechanical sports. On the occurrence of a recent accidental event in the field of open sea races, a patient has been suffering from sectional injuries of the lower limbs caused by foils or centre boards. The authors describe the pre-hospital action of “damage control” type of this seriously injured victim, the non-anticipated encountered troubles and the specificities of such an action in hostile environment. Specific shared skills of emergency medicine proved necessary to an early evacuation to the nearest hospital. Through this sharing of expertise, some simple proposals are put forward to adapt the pre-hospital medical intervention to the field of nautical competition, and to prevent such accidents.
