Abstract
At the end of the last century, when diabetes care entered its modern era, three simultaneous conceptual inventions transformed the practice of medicine, and, in particular, that of chronic diseases: evidence-based medicine, patient education and the application to medicine of the principle of autonomy. The purpose of this article appearing in a special issue celebrating the tenth anniversary of Médecine des maladies Métaboliques is to describe, forty years later, the current use of these inventions.
