Abstract
The glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was fortuitously discovered by an hematologist, in 1968. Fifty years later HbA1c assay has become an indispensable mean to evaluate the glycemic status, a pronostic marker of the risk of complications, a key determinant of the therapeutic strategy and, even, a valid and feasable tool for the diagnosis of diabetes.
