Abstract
There is an association between fatty liver or NonAlcoholic SteatoHepatitis (NASH) and the presence of subclinical atherosclerosis in the general population. Fatty liver increases the risk of incident arterial hypertension in non-diabetic individuals. A number of clinical studies showed that people with fatty liver had an increased risk of CV events as compared to those without fatty liver. This increased risk of CV events had also been shown in type 2 diabetes. Liver fibrosis is associated with an increased risk of total mortality. Fatty liver is associated with higher myocardial fat content as well. Accumulation of ceramide in blood vessels is suggested as a basis for vascular dysfunction.
