Abstract
The incidence of dementia is increasing, and is accompanied by concern to improve management, particularly through the development of non-pharmacological interventions. Among these approaches, the combination of cognitive and physical stimulation exercises has been shown to be effective in certain elderly populations. The dual objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and benefits of stimulation of this type among demented subjects. An experimental protocol of 24 “virtual dance” sessions (Dance Central on Xbox One) spread over three months was administered to 6 subjects (vs. seven controls). The analysis of the selected variables, evidencing very marked adherence (95%) and physical improvements evaluated on the Timed-Up-and-Go (TUG) test and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), supports the relevance of this approach in Long Term Care Units.
