Abstract
The International society of paediatric oncology (SIOP) was launched nearly 50Â years ago. It is the only global scientific and professional Society exclusively dedicated to paediatric oncology. While historically one of the main focus of SIOP was in the development and conduct of cooperative clinical trials, recent years have seen a progressive restructuration and a trend to focus on the needs of paediatric oncology globally. This particularly involves awareness campaigns concerning childhood cancer and advocacy around the needs of paediatric oncology in countries with limited resources. However, this shift in objectives raises a number of issues, in particular regarding the organisation of the society and the financial requirements to successfully achieve these goals.
