Abstract
Recent medical-technical evolutions and the socioeconomic context have led to a reorganization of care in hemato-oncology. Thus, new professional profiles have appeared, among which is that of “Coordinating” nurse. A national investigation was carried out in 2015, covering all French pediatric onco-hematology units, to evaluate the distribution, roles and missions of such nurses. This has also allowed us to collect verbal reports and the feelings of these professionals with respect to the new organization of the care of children and adolescents suffering from cancer. In spite of actions allied to institutional requirements, replies about positive experience (from both the children and their families, and the professionals) and a real interest for the coordinating function, these nurses were unsure about the recognition and value of their activity. In fact, a strong variance in the distribution and financing of the coordination jobs has been seen and should be adjusted so as to offer each child or adolescent suffering from cancer an efficient, concentrated, secure, individual support. In parallel, it is necessary today to continue the reflection about the training of these professionals, taking into account the specificities of pediatric oncology.
