Abstract
Mast cell disorders are underlain by abnormal numbers and/or activity of mast cells, either organ-specific or systemic. Clonal expansion of mast cells, with or without abnormal mast cell activation, belong to the WHO category of mastocytosis, a myeloid neoplasm in its systemic variant. Mast cell activation syndromes have recently become a subject of intense research. We performed a literature review on mastocytosis and mast cell activation syndromes, with special focus on laboratory work-up as a tool for allergists.
