Abstract
Health care associated infections, classically called nosocomial infections, are those acquired during hospital stay. They suppose an increase of the morbimortality, the stay hospital, the associated costs and the antibiotic resistances. In Spain the prevalence is 8%. The most frequent sites of infection are related to invasive procedures and are: respiratory, urinary, surgical wound and bacteremia associated with the use of catheters. As for etiology, the most common germs are gram negative, Staphilococcus and fungi, varying depending on the source of infection. Both the clinic and the diagnosis vary according to the location being necessary its detection and early treatment for its control and improvement of the prognosis. It is necessary its diagnosis and early treatment for its control to improve the prognosis. The fundamental aspect to reduce its prevalence are the prevention and surveillance measures among which hand hygiene is considered the most effective measure.
