Abstract
The empirical antibiotic treatment of intra-abdominal infections currently poses a challenge, especially due the development of gram negative micro-organisms that produce extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL), and the threat of multi-resistant microorganisms. Clinical evidence is limited as to the appropriate empirical treatment of choice for complicated intra-abdominal infection, health care-related, caused by gram negative micro-organisms, possible polymicrobial infections and/or in seriously ill patients with multiple comorbidities. Therapeutic guidelines are an important tool in the choice of antimicrobial agent. However, establishing the local resistance pattern of the principal pathogens is essential to tackle resistance.
