Abstract
Diagnosis is essentially clinical and also seeks to classify the gravity and extent of the infection. In some cases, inflammatory signs and suppuration can be less obvious due to the particular features of an infection that involves organised bacterial communities that adhere to the tissue of the ulcer (biofilms). It is advisable to pursue an aetiological diagnosis by taking local samples and using microbiological techniques. Imaging tests can be more accurate for diagnosis and to evaluate the extent of the infection.
