Abstract
Streptococci are sensitive to β-lactam antibiotics. Resistance to penicillin in S. pneumoniae is less than 5% and in some species, such as β-hemolytic streptococci, has not yet been described. Third-generation cephalosporins are the antibiotics of choice for the treatment of invasive infections such as bacteremia or meningitis and clindamycin is used as necrotizing fasciitis due to its immunomodulatory effects and inhibition of exotoxins and other virulence factors. Macrolides are not recommended due to their current rates of resistance up to 20%.
