Abstract
The genus Staphylococcus contains 40 species of which only a few are pathogens. S. aureus is the most virulent species, producing toxigenic and non toxigenic infections. Empirical treatment of S. aureus strains which are resistant to methicillin (SARM) is undertaken with glycopeptides, linezolid or daptomycin. The coagulase negative staphylococci produce infections associated with foreign bodies. The majority are resistant to methicillin, and treatment is therefore similar to that of the SARM. S. saprophyticus produce urinary tract infections in young, sexually active women and S. lugdunensis produce virulent infections which are clinically more similar to those produced by S. aureus.
