Abstract
Melanocytic tumours encompass a group of lesions comprised of melanocytes that typically form dermal nests. These are a heterogeneous group of tumours that range from benign lesions such as melanocytic nevi (acquired or congenital) to malignant tumours such as melanoma. Dermal melanocytic lesions also form part of this group, such as Mongolian spots and nevus of Ito and Ota. Melanoma has been increasing in incidence over recent decades in Western countries and has high mortality when diagnosed in advanced stages. Early detection and surgery in the initial stages can result in a cure in most cases.
