Abstract
A diagnosis of herpes simplex virus infection is usually clinical, but if there is any doubt a culture or PCR should be obtained. Human papilloma virus infections are also usually diagnosed clinically, and biopsies and histological tests performed if in doubt. Direct examination is recommended with fungal skin infections, visualisation rapidly confirms the fungal structure, and then a culture should be obtained to confirm the species.
