Abstract
Ultrasound is the most cost-effective test for thyroid imaging. It is dependent operator and uses equipment with high resolution transducers, with color Doppler. It is recommended to request thyroid ultrasound in patients with goiter, palpable nodules, history of familial thyroid cancer, a history of cervical radiation in childhood. Suspicious characteristics of malignancy: solid nodules with marked hypoechogenicity, higher than wide, lobulated or spiculated edges and the presence of microcalcifications. Ultrasound is essential in the detection of nodules, as support in obtaining samples for cytopathological study, in pre-operative staging, and post-operative monitoring, to detect and confirm early cervical recurrences. Ultrasound is useful in the diagnosis and monitoring of benign diffuse and nodular thyroid deseases and as support for minimally invasive treatments.
