Abstract
In this article, we review evidence about the elements that could be affecting the motivation of the different generations that work in Nursing. The literature indicates that motivational factors significantly affect both performance and turnover and it has been suggested that different generations should be managed in ways specific to their characteristics. The review of the evidence does not support clearly this last statement. However, there is evidence that other variables that could be related to the generations, such as age, gender or culture, could be affecting key elements in motivation and satisfaction, including the meaning of work, autonomy, interpersonal relationships, relationship and quality of supervision, the perceived level of equity and adequacy of rewards, as well as the possibilities of professional development. The main recommendation is to analyze the behavior considering not only the generational attribution but also the other variables that could be affecting clinical nurses' motivation.
