Abstract
New diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed outside the operating room has grown widely in recent decades. This has involved a challenge for anesthesiologists who have had to adapt their work, interacting with multiple medical specialties and in places not initially designed to provide anesthesia. The diversity of procedures and patients involve the entire anesthetic spectrum from monitored anesthetic care to general anesthesia. The reported complications are the same as those occurred in the surgical setting, being those involving airway management the ones with the highest incidence. Maintaining standards of quality, similar to provided in regular surgical patients, frequent training of all staff involved and the implementation and compliance of guidelines that identify the risks and unique aspects of this activity, will be key in reducing the occurrence of adverse events and the severity of the injury.
